Most of what we call internal conflict is actually a monologue. One part speaks; another part argues back. The second part wins temporarily; then the first reasserts itself. The cycle continues for years without resolution because what looks like dialogue is actually two parts taking turns delivering prepared speeches to an empty room. Neither one is genuinely listening. Neither one is actually meeting the other.
