"What do you do?" is the dominant opening move in adult social interaction across much of the English-speaking world, and in many other places besides. It is so embedded in the social script that most people who ask it have not noticed what they are actually asking. They are not asking about activities. They are asking about rank. They are asking the newcomer to self-assign a position in the hierarchy before the conversation can proceed.

The question wounds specific categories of people predictably: the unemployed, the recently unemployed, the underemployed, the person whose work is unpaid (caregiver, domestic labor, volunteer), the person whose work defies easy categorization, the person who is between identities, the person who does not want to be their job. For these people, the question is not a neutral opener. It is a demand that they immediately navigate shame in a social setting, with no warning and no exit.

The wound is not about sensitivity. It is about architecture. The question is structured to route every answer through the labor market. It has no routing mechanism for a person who is between jobs, who is doing work that the market does not price, or who simply does not want to lead with their economic function. The architecture of the question forecloses other answers before they can be given.

What is the question actually looking for? In most cases: a quick placement. The asker is trying to build a social map of the room — who is this person, how do I relate to them, what do we have in common, what is their status. The job answer is a shortcut to all of that. The problem is that the shortcut runs through the labor market's valuation system, which means it implicitly ranks people before the conversation has found its own level.

An alternative question — "what are you working on lately?" or "what have you been thinking about?" — routes through activity and interest rather than market position. These questions are no less effective at building social maps; in fact, they are more effective because they reveal actual content rather than a title. But they require a different social assumption: that the person in front of you is more than their economic function.

The culture that produces "what do you do?" as the default opener is a culture that has agreed, at the level of social reflex, that economic function is the primary relevant fact about a person. This is Law 0 territory: the question, by design, subordinates being to doing, and it subordinates doing to being-paid-to-do. The person who works but is not paid does not have a clean answer. The person who is paid but not in a legible category does not have a clean answer. The person who is in transition does not have a clean answer. All of these people must either lie (compress a complex truth into a market-legible phrase), perform ("I'm actually between things right now, ha"), or absorb the moment of social awkwardness that comes from giving a true but non-standard answer.

The solution is not to police the question. It is to understand what the question reveals — about the asker, about the culture, and about the systems of worth that are operating invisibly in every social room. And to develop, personally, a stable enough sense of identity that the question can be answered honestly without triggering a shame spiral. That stability is what Law 0 provides: the bedrock from which a person can say "I'm not working right now" without apologizing, because the sentence is a fact about an employment status, not a verdict on a life.
