Its creed: rest is weakness, sleep is for the unsuccessful, and your worth is a direct function of your output. Call it the grindset cult — a collective belief system that fuses identity with labor productivity and treats chronic overwork not as a symptom of systemic failure but as a personal virtue.
The word "grindset" is portmanteau slang, but the phenomenon it describes is old. What's new is the cultural machinery surrounding it: a multi-billion-dollar content economy built on the aesthetics of 4 a.m. wake-ups, cold plunges, and hustle reels. The cult has leaders, liturgy, rituals, and, crucially, a theology of shame. Those who cannot keep pace are not unlucky or structurally disadvantaged — they simply did not want it badly enough.
At the collective level, the grindset cult performs several societal functions simultaneously, most of them troubling. It naturalizes precarity: when workers are taught to treat their own exhaustion as insufficient dedication, the structural conditions that generate that exhaustion become invisible. The employer who denies rest, the economy that fails to distribute wealth fairly, the housing market that demands two incomes to meet what one once covered — all of these disappear behind the figure of the individual who just needs to grind harder.
The cult also produces a particular form of collective amnesia. Historical memory of labor movements, of eight-hour-day campaigns, of solidarity that won weekends and ended child labor, evaporates when every generation is resocialized into the belief that suffering through overwork is not oppression but optimization. The grindset influencer is, in this sense, the perfect ideological counter-reformer: personable, aspirational, and structurally conservative in a way that never announces its politics.
Law 0 — Humility, Grace, and Forgiveness — sits in direct opposition to the grindset cult's core liturgy. The cult is built on a theology of endless self-judgment: no output is ever enough, no rest is ever earned, and the self is perpetually in arrears. When suffering is reframed as a personal strategy, collective responses to shared problems feel like admissions of failure rather than rational coordination. Social safety nets become stigmatized. Rest becomes a luxury rather than a right. The language of self-optimization colonizes public discourse to the point where policy conversations about work hours, parental leave, and healthcare get filtered through a lens of individual willpower rather than structural design.
There is also a racialized and classed dimension that the cult consistently obscures. The grindset content economy is predominantly white and male in its most visible faces, yet it disproportionately markets its ideology to communities of color and to working-class audiences for whom the game is structurally stacked against them. The message is not merely motivational — it is, functionally, a mechanism of class reproduction dressed in the language of meritocracy.
Reclaiming collective wellbeing requires naming the cult for what it is: not a productivity philosophy but a submission ideology. Law 0's framework of humility offers a counter-grammar. To be humble at a collective scale means acknowledging that societies are built on mutual dependency, not individual heroics. To extend grace collectively means designing systems that assume human limits rather than pathologizing them. To practice forgiveness institutionally means creating structures — labor protections, rest mandates, living wages — that do not require workers to earn their humanity through exhaustion.
The grindset cult will not dissolve through individual insight alone. It requires the same mechanism it fears most: collective action.
