For much of the twentieth century, the workplace was the primary context in which American adults formed friendships outside of family and neighborhood. Not because work was an ideal friendship environment — it imposed hierarchy, competition, and professional norms that constrained genuine intimacy — but because work was where people spent most of their waking hours, in forced proximity with the same people, day after day, year after year. Friendship formed in this proximity not primarily because people sought it but because the conditions for friendship formation — repeated contact, shared experience, accumulated mutual familiarity — were automatically provided by the structure of work.
The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated an existing transition to remote and hybrid work at a speed and scale that has no recent precedent. In 2020, a large fraction of the American knowledge-worker workforce abruptly shifted from office to home, eliminating the physical co-presence that had been the substrate of workplace social life. In the years following, many employers established hybrid arrangements — two or three days per week in the office — that partially restored physical contact without restoring the social continuity that full-time office presence provided. A smaller but significant cohort remained fully remote.
The social consequences of this transition are now measurable. Survey data collected since 2020 consistently shows that remote and hybrid workers report weaker workplace social ties, fewer workplace friendships, greater difficulty forming new workplace relationships, and higher social isolation than their in-person counterparts. These findings hold even after controlling for pre-pandemic social baseline and personal preferences about remote work.
The workplace friendship erosion of the remote-work era is therefore not primarily a story about whether people like working from home. Many people do. It is a story about the collateral social cost of removing the architectural conditions that friendship formation in adulthood depends on — conditions that the office, for all its imperfections, reliably provided. That cost is only beginning to be fully reckoned.
