Robert Putnam named the bowling league as the emblem of a form of social capital that had disappeared from American life. He was not writing about bowling. He was writing about the specific social infrastructure that bowling leagues represented: the recurring gathering, the mixed social group, the institutional context that produced regular contact among people who might not otherwise have sought each other out. By the time Putnam published Bowling Alone in 2000, the bowling lanes themselves were still there. What was gone was the league — the structure, the membership, the recurring obligation to show up.
The bowling alley, the bar, the church, and the union hall are not four random institutions. They are four distinct modalities of the same social function: the provision of recurring, low-cost, institutionally organized contexts for adult social life that were available to ordinary working-class and middle-class Americans across the mid-twentieth century. Together, they constituted a social infrastructure that generated friendship and community as a byproduct of their primary purposes — recreation, fellowship, faith, and labor solidarity — without requiring anyone to schedule friendship explicitly.
The mid-twentieth century American who was embedded in all four of these institutions — who bowled in a Tuesday night league, drank in a neighborhood tavern with known regulars, attended Sunday services with a congregation, and participated in union local meetings and socials — had a social life that organized itself around recurring structures. Friendship formed in the interstices of these structures without deliberate effort. The institutions did the work.
All four of these institutional forms have declined substantially in participation since the 1960s. The decline is documented across multiple measurement frameworks — survey data on organizational participation, membership records, establishment counts, time-use surveys. The timing of the decline corresponds closely with the timing of the adult friendship decline documented in the General Social Survey. The correspondence is not coincidental. The institutions were the primary mechanism of friendship formation and maintenance for the majority of American adults. When they declined, friendship declined with them.
